Indication

Used for rhinorrhoea associated with allergic and vasomotor rhinitis, and common cold. Dries nasal sceretions.

Action

Promote drying of nasal secretions by cholinergic inhibition.

Dose advice

Atrovent Nasal: Nasal spray, 21mcg/dose, 180 doses.Atrovent Nasal Forte: Nasal spray, 42mcg/dose, 180 doses.Rhinorrhoea (allergic or vasomotor rhinitis):

  • Atrovent nasal spray: Initially 2-4 sprays into each nostril, 2-3 times daily then reduce dose as rhinorrhoea improves.
  • Atrovent nasal forte spray: Initially 1-2 sprays into each nostril 2-3 times daily, then reduce dose as rhinorrhoea improves.Rhinorrhoea (common cold):
  • Atrovent nasal spray: Initially 4 sprays into each nostril, 3-4 times daily then reduce dose as rhinorrhoea improves; use for up to 4 days.
  • Atrovent nasal forte spray: Initially 2 sprays into each nostril 3-4 times daily, then reduce dose as rhinorrhoea improves; use for up to 4 days.

Common side effects

  • Nasal dryness
  • Nose bleed
  • Dry mouth
  • Altered taste

Uncommon side effects

  • Urinary retention (there is a risk of aggravation of symptoms in patients with prostatic hypertrophy).
  • Visual accommodation disturbance (there is a risk of aggravation of symptoms in patients with pre-existing glaucoma).
  • Allergic reactions (urticaria, angioedema, rash, bronchospasm).
