Singapore’s Ministry of Health has lifted quarantine orders placed on 74 people as a precaution against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus. The 74 people under home quarantine had their restrictions lifted last night as no one has developed signs of SARS. The virus has a 10-day incubation period, meaning symptoms of SARS should have developed by now. The quarantined people had contact with a SARS-infected Taiwanese man who visited Singapore early last week. Six people who fell ill were admitted to the Communicable Disease Centre. All have tested negative for the SARS coronavirus. The Taiwanese SARS case is the second laboratory infection since the virus was contained worldwide. Due to the nature of the disease, being easily spread and as yet no vaccine is available, The World Health Organisation (WHO) urged laboratories to handle the virus with more care(Source: ABC News, Dec 2003)
