Review of the National Cancer Control Initiative

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

In 1997, the Federal Government contracted the Australian Cancer Society to establish the National Cancer Control Initiative ((NCCI) as an independent expert reference body to provide timely advice on all issues relating to the reduction of the burden of cancer in the community.

The NCCI has been involved in a wide range of projects since its inception. For example, it has been responsible for the development of guidelines for the management of colorectal cancer; demonstration projects aimed at improving diagnostic skills for skin cancer have been implemented; clinical practice guidelines for the psychosocial care of adults with cancer has been completed; and a national database of cancer control activities has been established through the NCCI.The NCCI is provided funding through an agreement with the Federal Government that requires an Independent Review to be undertaken. The Review will consider the initiatives, progress to date and provide recommendations on future efforts and practical outcomes. The Review Team comprises Professor David Weller, Head of the Department of General Practice, University of Edinburgh, Professor Dick Smallwood, former Chief Medical Officer for the Federal Department of Health and Ageing, and Ms Lynette Glendinning, C.E.O. of PALM Consulting Group. As an important stakeholder in the activities of the NCCI the Virtual Cancer Centre (VCC) is currently preparing a submission for the Review Panel. The Editorial Advisory Board of the VCC includes more than 90 cancer specialists working across Australia. Hence, it is well-placed to provide a comprehensive overview of the activities of the NCCI. In addition, the VCC welcomes comments from members regarding the NCCI. Should you wish to contribute to the VCC submission please email your comments to: runderwood@virtualmedicalcentre.com by Monday, 8th December, 2003.
