New research into long-haul air travel indicates 1 per cent of travellers may develop potentially fatal blood clots caused by deep vein thrombosis (DVT).Evidence published in the British-based Lancet journal is based on the monitoring of nearly 900 regular long-haul passengers. The research, carried out at the Medical Research Institute in New Zealand, shows even passengers wearing compression stockings and those sitting in business class are at risk.It is thought the potentially deadly condition stems from poor blood circulation caused by sitting for hours on aircraft.The research was carried out on travellers considered a low to moderate risk.However, it indicated four people in very long-haul jumbo flight could, on average, suffer a clot. Relatives of victims of DVT are welcoming the findings, which they say vindicate their call for more warnings and information for travellers.(Source: ABC Health News Dec 2003)
