BRCA2 Mutations Linked to Familial Pancreatic Cancer

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The findings of a recent study suggest that BRCA2 mutations play an important role in a subgroup of families with a predisposition to develop pancreatic cancer.

The study involved 26 European families in which at least 2 family members had histologically verified pancreatic cancer. Lymphocyte DNA was taken from participating family members and analysed for BRCA2 germline mutations.

The overall prevalence of BRCA2 mutations was 19%. This finding has immediate implications for the genetic counseling and clinical screening of individuals from kindreds with at least two first-degree relatives affected with histologically confirmed ductal carcinomas of the pancreas.
