Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Generic Name: Chlorpheniramine maleate; Dextromethorphan hydrobromide; Paracetamol; Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride
Product Name: Parke-Davis Day & Night Cold & Flu Capsules

Indication

Parke-Davis Day & Night Cold & Flu Capsules are used for the temporary relief of cold and flu symptoms. The Day capsules are useful in the treatment of headache, body aches and pains, blocked nose, fever and dry cough. The Night preparation treats headache, body aches and pains, fever and dry cough, whilst also relieving a runny nose and helping the patient to sleep.

Action

Parke-Davis Day & Night Cold & Flu Capsules contain four different active ingredients, Paracetamol, Pseudoephedrine, Dextromethorphan and Chlorpheniramine.
Paracetamol is a well known analgesic agent. It acts on the chemicals that regulate body temperature and nerve sensitivity to pain, thereby reducing pain and fever.
Pseudoephedrine stimulates certain receptors in blood vessels to cause them to constrict. This reduces blood flow to the nose and sinuses, decreasing swelling and nasal discharge. This is known as a decongestant action.
Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressing agent. It makes the throat less sensitive to cough stimulants by acting on the brain.
Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine agent that is useful against allergic reactions. It is used in the Parke-Davis Night caps for its sedative properties.

Common side effects

Reports of adverse reactions to Paracetamol are rare. The following have been reported but not proven to be related to use of Paracetamol:
– nausea
– stomach upset
– allergic reaction
Pseudoephedrine stimulates the sympathetic nervous system (which is responsible for the â??fight-or-flightâ? response) and may cause symptoms such as:
– tremor
– anxiety
– increased heart rate
– insomnia
– urinary retention (in males with prostatic enlargement)
Dextromethorphan may cause:
– drowsiness
– constipation
– nausea
– vomiting
The major side effect caused by Chlorpheniramine is sedation, but this is often actually the desired effect (inclusion in night preparation).

Uncommon side effects

Allergic reactions to Pseudoephedrine have been very rarely reported, and consist of a widespread rash of red, coin-sized patches.
Dextromethorphan may occasionally cause respiratory depression and should be used with caution in patients with existing respiratory disease of any sort.
