Action

Benzodiazepines potentiate the inhibitory effects of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA throughout the CNS, resulting in anxiolytic, sedative hypnotic, muscle relaxant and antiepileptic effects

Dose advice

Adults:
Insomnia: 5-10mg at night
Elderly: 2.5-5mg at night
Maximum: 20mg at night (hospitalized benzodiazepine dependent patients)
Children:
Infantile spasms; myoclonic epilepsy: 0.125-0.5mg/kg/dose, twice daily
