Carafate
Generic Name: Sucralfate
Product Name: Carafate
Indication
Carafate is used to treat acute ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. Taken at a lower dose, it can also be used to prevent recurrence of these ulcers in the future.
Action
A stomach ulcer forms when the delicate lining of the stomach loses the protection of the stomachâ??s natural mucus and is exposed to stomach acid. When they have been exposed, Carafate coats the lining cells of the stomach to protect them from the harmful action of stomach acid. It can also bind to some of the digestive enzymes in the stomach and prevent them from worsening the ulcer. It is not an antacid.
