Indication
Salbutamol is used in for the relief of bronchospasm (constriction of airways) caused by asthma or chronic airways disease. It can also be used in the acute prevention of asthma in situations known to induce it, such as exercise.
Action
Salbutamol is a ¡°reliever¡± medication for the treatment of asthma. It acts quickly on the nerves that control the airway muscles and causes them to relax, dilating the airways. It also relieves swelling of the airways that can be caused by the allergic response, and helps clear mucous that may contribute to asthmatic symptoms.
Dose advice
Salbutamol is to be used under medical supervision. It can be used with any efficient nebulising device.
Adults
– 5mg should be nebulised until entire volume inhaled
– repeat every four to six hours
Children 4-12 years
– 2.5mg should be nebulised until entire volume inhaled
– repeat every four to six hours
– safety in children under the age of 18 months has not been established
Elderly
– dosage in the elderly should start below the adult dose and increase if sufficient bronchodilatation is not achieved Hepatic and renal impairment
– Salbutamol may accumulate in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction
– dosage reduction may be required in these patients
Increasing need for Salbutamol indicates worsening of asthma or deterioration in asthma control. Patients should be advised to see their doctor if they are requiring increasing amounts of the medication.

Common side effects
– fine tremor
– increased heart rate (in patients with normal heart rate)- agitation
– decreased heart rate (in patients with fast heart rate due to illness)
Uncommon side effects
– headache
– nausea
– palpitations
– feeling of warmth
– mouth and throat irritation (due to inhalation of medication)
– muscle cramps have been reported very rarely
