Folate is an essential micronutrient involved in DNA synthesis, which means that without adequate levels of folate, cells cannot divide and replicate and growth is restricted. At times of increased cell growth (e.g. pregnancy), an individual’s folate requirement increases. Folate deficiency during pregnancy increases the risk of neural tube defects in the infant.
