Walkers Relay to the Cancer Cause
Last weekend, 1200 people divided into 66 teams walked the oval at St. Leonards Athletic Centre to raise money for the Cancer Council Tasmania. The event began at noon on Saturday and finished at 11am on Sunday.
There was very wide community support and a great atmosphere. Last year, 850 participants raised $93,000. This year they think about $100,000 should be raised. The relay started with a lap of honour by 58 cancer survivors and their carers, wearing red sashes.
Money raised goes towards education and support for people with cancer. Cancer patients commented how much they benefited from the information and support services made possible by fundraising. A new service called Cancer Connect allows people being treated for cancer to be put in touch with cancer survivors. This service in particular had a lot of positive feedback from patients.
