WA research could spell end to blood glucose pricks
The use of needles to monitor blood glucose levels could become a thing of the past thanks to technology being developed in Western Australia.
The Lions Eye Institute’s innovation uses a miniature camera fixed to a pair of glasses that can take a snapshot of the retina and provide an instant blood sugar reading.Researcher Yogi Kanagasingam says the retinal readings would eliminate the distress and risk of infection from needles. He says a $250,000 research grant from AusIndustry may help take the idea to consumers within two years.”We are very excited, we didn’t expect the funding to come,” he said.”We were actually hoping to work with some companies from outside Australia, as nobody showed interest in Australia.”But this came as a surprise, and it was a great boost to us.”(Source: ABC Health, Nov 2004)
