Vietnam detected a new suspected case of flu type A infection on Monday, raising the total number of infections and suspects to 299 so far. The latest patient is a 12-year-old boy from the ethnic minority group of M’Nong in central highlands Dac Nong province, the country ‘s Health Ministry announced on Monday. Of the 299 cases, who come from 37 localities including 17 in the north and 20 in the south, 100 have remained hospitalized, 41 died, and 159 recovered fully. The country has so far detected a total of 22 cases of H5N1 infections, including 15 fatalities, the ministry said. Vietnam, which discovered no new affected communes and destroyed no poultry on Monday, has detected no new outbreaks of bird flu in nine cities and provinces, including five northern localities over the past three weeks. So far, the country has reported 2,573 communes of 57 cities and provinces nationwide being hit by bird flu, which has killed and led to the forced killing of 38.3 million fowls, or 15.1 percent of the total poultry population.(Source: Xinhuanet, Feb 2004)
