UN issues eastern Europe AIDS warning
The United Nations has warned that eastern Europe’s development is under threat, after a report found the region is experiencing some of the fastest rates of HIV-AIDS infection in the world. The study, released by the United Nations Development Program, is the first AIDS report focused on the region since the collapse of the Soviet Union. It says the economic growth of each nation in the region could soon be reduced by one per cent of Gross Domestic Production, which is described as a tremendous impact for any country. The head of the UN Development Program, Mark Malloch Brown, says the impact of the disease will be devastating. “This is a region where some of the populations are already falling, so when you combine this epidemic with already falling birth rates you’re suddenly going to find that the number of people who are workers … is going to get very much smaller relative to the old and the young,” Mr Brown said.
