France has five confirmed cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome……..France has five confirmed cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), with another nine people under observation after showing symptoms.The updated toll shows a decline in the number of people under medical observation, from 13 on Monday.The first confirmed French case was a doctor who worked in Vietnam.The other four cases are people who had contact with the doctor, either in Hanoi or on the Air France jet he took back to Paris.The virus has claimed more than 150 lives around the world, mostly in Asia, with more than 3,500 other confirmed or suspected cases detected since the start of the global outbreak.(Source: ABC Online; Wednesday, April 16, 2003. 5:21am (AEST))
