AUSTRALIA has restructured its international tourism marketing budgets in a bid to reverse an inbound tourism decline brought on by SARS.Federal Tourism Minister Joe Hockey today said the Government was seriously examining what it could do to boost inbound tourism numbers, which have suffered due to fears about the spread of the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome virus. “Obviously the biggest threat to tourism at the moment is SARS,” he told Channel 7. “We have cancelled substantial marketing budgets throughout Asia, parts of Europe and certainly in the United States, and we’re re-allocating funds into New Zealand, India and into other markets that are not affected by SARS.” He said the Government had activated its national tourism crisis plan, involving daily meetings between state and commonwealth officials, in order to discuss ways of reversing the impact of the war with Iraq and the threat of terrorism.
