One of the easiest and cheapest ways to reduce pain is through regular physical activity. Regular movement improves the range of motion at joints, preventing stiffness and pain, allowing patients to stay mobile and perform everyday tasks. Physical activity also has the additional benefits of controlling weight and increasing strength and balance. The Virtual Medical Centre now hosts an educational video from Pfizer and Arthritis NSW, which explains and gives a visual demonstration of a variety of simple exercises that can be performed at the patient’s home. It starts with stretching exercises for all the joints susceptible to arthritic pain, such as the hands, neck, back and hips, amongst others. It also includes stretches and strengthening exercises that can help to increase mobility and decrease the risk of falls. The video explains the safe and correct technique with which to perform all of these exercises, along with tips to improve walking technique. All of this is explained using language that is simple and easy for patients to understand. These exercises will only take 5 to 10 minutes to complete and best of all, they’re free! Regular exercise has been proven to be an effective way of managing arthritic pain, and should be included in any management program. This video gives both patients and physicians a better knowledge of the exercises that can be used in an arthritis management programme. Patients will soon find that they experience less pain during the day and are better able to carry out everyday tasks.
