Regular Exercise Can Reduce Arthritic Pain

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of joint pain in the world, affecting 3.4 million Australians in 2004. It usually develops through wear and tear at the joints, increasing in prevalence with age, and can reduce the mobility and quality of life of those affected. Fortunately however, the effects of osteoarthritis can be limited through appropriate management.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to reduce pain is through regular exercise. Regular movement improves the range of motion at joints, preventing stiffness and pain, allowing you to stay mobile and perform everyday tasks. Physical activity also has the additional benefits of controlling weight and increasing strength and balance.

The Virtual Medical Centre now hosts an educational video from Pfizer and Arthritis NSW, which explains and demonstrates a variety of simple exercises that can be done at home. They cover all the joints susceptible to arthritic pain such as the hands, neck, back and hips, as well as stretches and strengthening exercises that help to increase mobility and decrease the risk of falls. The video explains the safe and correct technique with which to perform these exercises, in a simple and easy to understand way.

These exercises take only 5 to 10 minutes to complete and best of all, they’re free! Regular exercise has been proven to be an effective way of managing arthritic pain, and should be included in any management program, with consultation from your GP. By following the exercises on this video, you will soon find that you experience less pain during the day and are better able to carry out everyday tasks.
