National Breast Cancer Day

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Today is Australia’s National Breast Cancer Day. There is a silent walk through Sydney to the Field of Women – a tribute to all those who have suffered or are suffering breast cancer. Some of the exceptional efforts put in by Australians in this area were presented at ESMO, the European Society for Medical Oncology , where they received high accolades.

One of the highlights of attending an international specialists meeting is hearing presentations from locals – at this years European Society for Medical Oncology meeting in Nice, a whole day symposium was sponsored by the drug company Roche, which focused on areas in which patients and patient advocacy groups had made a big difference in the field of breast cancer.

Australia was represented by Carol Bishop, from the Breast Cancer Network of Australia who presented details about today’s silent walk through Sydney city, to the Domain, where this years Field of Women are gathering.

This will be a field containing 12 500 silhouettes, of which 10 000 will be pink to represent the annual incidence of breast cancer and 2 500 will be white, to represent the number of women who will die this year from the disease.

This is now the fourth year of this program and it is possible to sponsor one of the silhouettes in the Field of Women, for instance in remembrance of a loved one or in support of someone who is currently battling the disease.
