Federal Labor candidate Peter Garrett has told an Asthma Foundation function how as a child, he lost his father to the respiratory disease.Mr Garrett addressed the function during his first visit to Adelaide since he joined Labor.Later, it was standing room only in the Adelaide University bar to hear the former Midnight Oil frontman’s condemnation of the Federal Government’s tertiary education policies.Mr Garrett also went to pains to point out that he was not courted to join Labor.”I had discussions with people by the time I finished with Midnight Oil and was working at ACF as to how I could be useful in politics and make a real contribution and just do the best that I could, and those discussions included, informally, people with Labor,” he said.”So for all its virtues and its faults and its flaws and its imperfections and its humanity but also its prospects for making the country better.”It was my choice to get involved in politics in this way, nobody else’s.”(Source: ABC Health, August 2004)
