North Queenslanders are being warned not to drop their guard on dengue fever just because the weather is cooling down.As of Friday, 52 cases of dengue fever were confirmed in Townsville, including a new case in Thuringowa. The Tropical Public Health Unit’s director of environmental health, John Piispanen, says as the number of cases rise, symptoms of the virus are also changing. “Whilst I suppose when the outbreak started we were talking about mild symptoms, that’s changed somewhat, there’s a few people that have been hospitalised along the way and I think we’re finding now that the people that have got dengue have got significant symptoms,” he said.(Source: ABC Health News, May 2004)
