Today is Australia’s Breast Cancer Day (ABCD) – a day dedicated to the raising of awareness and research into breast cancer.

Dozens of volunteers will be in shopping centres accross the metropolitan area today selling ABCD merchandise in an effort to raise $100,000 for research and support for paitents and their families effected by breast cancer.

According to the Cancer Foundation of Western Australia, one in eleven women risk developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Each year more than 1,000 West Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and almost 200 lose the battle.

To coincide with the activities of today, the Government has announced a new treatment for breast cancer will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from Friday.

Hailed as dramatically increasing the survival rates of women with advanced breast cancer, this study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, is said to increase survival rates by 50% and more effectively reduce tumour size.

The treatment combines Chemotherapy drugs, capecitabine and doxetaxel.
