US funding will allow Australian researchers to investigate the causes of oesophageal cancer.

Australian scientists are planning to undertake research funded by the US National Institute of Health into the underlying causes of the rapid increase in the incidence of oesophageal cancer.

The US National Institute of Health is providing funding over a five-year period totaling $2.47 million to find a cause for this deadly disease.

Researchers from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Flinders University and Royal Adelaide Hospital will be involved.

The researchers have suggested oesophageal cancer “is related to reflux and is probably another by-product of overweight and obesity” and that “At the moment…. the cancer is diagnosed far too late.”

The research is planned to commence within two months.
