Asthma research centre gets $26m federal grant
It is hoped a new multi-million dollar asthma research project to be partly based in the Hunter will open new opportunities for young scientists in the local region.
Yesterday, the Cooperative Research Centre for Asthma and Airways received a federal grant of more than $26 million for the next seven years, with Newcastle researchers Paul Foster and Peter Gibson as the Hunter region principal investigators.Professor Foster says he is hoping the project will attract promising young scientists to Newcastle.”Our expectation would be that there would be a lot of new young scientists recruited to the region and also one of the main focuses is to nurture our emerging scientists of the future,” he said. “So there’ll be a lot of PhD scholarships available for new and young investigators coming out of Newcastle.”(Source: ABC Health News, December 2004)
