ADHD research to be carried out in Adelaide

An Adelaide researcher says a new study will help doctors more accurately diagnose behavioural disorders in children. Professor Richard Clark of Flinders University will study children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, to determine exactly what part of their brain is affected. The results will be analysed against a large database of children with normal brain functions. He says a precise profile of the disorder will allow for more effective treatment. “You have cases now where Ritalin may not work for children but that may be because the diagnosis is not exactly correct,” Professor Clark said. “If we are successful – and I believe we have a very, very good chance of being so – in identifying brain function profiles that characterise ADHD with a high degree of specificity, then that information is going to be really valuable for clinicians.”
