Indication
Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic drug.It is used for the relief of:
- mild to moderate pain
- fever
- migraine
- tension headaches
Action
Paracetamol reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins which are responsible for the mediation of pain and fever.
Dose advice
Adults:
- 0.5 – 1g every 3-6 hours as required given orally or rectally.
- The maximum daily dose is 6g.
Children:
- 15 mg/kg every 4-6 hours given orally or rectally.
- Single doses of 30 mg/kg may be used for night-time dosing.
- The maximum recommended dose is 60 mg/kg daily over 48 hours however up to 90 mg/kg a day may be used under close medical supervision.
Schedule
Tablets, Capsule-Shaped Tablets:
- 12’s, 24’s: Unscheduled;
- 48’s, 100’s: S2
- Children’s Chewable Tablets: S2
Common side effects
Side effects of Paracetamol are rare.

- Nausea and vomiting

- Hives
- Rash
