Indication

Carbamazepine is used in the following conditions
Epilepsy
Trigeminal neuralgia
Glossopharyngeal neuralgia
Manic episodes in patients with bipolar disorder (manic depressives)
Prevention of bipolar disorder
To relieve certain types of pain

Action

Carbamazepine acts on nerve cells causing them to become more stable and fire off impulses less frequently. It also reduces the levels of certain chemicals in the body.

Dose advice

Epilepsy
Adults:
The initial recommended starting dose is 100 mg twice daily
This dose may be gradually increased by 100â??200 mg every 2â??4 weeks depending on the patientâ??s individual response to treatment
The usual dose ranges from 400 mg â?? 1200 mg per day
Doses of up to 2 g per day may be required in some patients

Elderly patients: 50 mg twice daily

Children
The initial recommended dose is 5â??8 mg/kg daily given in two divided doses
This dose may be gradually increased up to 10â??20 mg/kg daily

Trigeminal neuralgia
The initial recommended starting dose is 50â??100 mg once or twice daily
This dose may be gradually increased up to 400â??800 mg daily given in 2â??4 divided doses.
Doses of up to 1.6 g per day may be required in some patients

Neuropathic pain
The initial recommended dose is 100 mg twice daily
This dose may be gradually increased until pain relieved.
The usual dose ranges from 200â??600 mg per day
The dose should not exceed 1.2 g per day

Mania and bipolar disorder
The initial recommended dose is 400 mg daily in divided doses
This dose may be gradually increased up to 1600 mg daily depending on the patientâ??s individual response to treatment
