Selective inhibition of pre-synaptic uptake of serotonin (5- hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)
SSRIs inhibit liver cytochrome enzymes responsible for the metabolism of many other drugs, thus potentially interacting with those drugs by decreasing their metabolism
Dose advice
20mg once daily, gradually increasing if necessary to a maximum of 60mg daily (40mg in the elderly).
Maintenance doses > 20mg are not usually necessary
