Generic Name: Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride
Product Name: Sudafed 12 hour relief

Indication

Relief of nasal congestion associated with acute and chronic rhinitis, common cold and sinusitis

Action

Cause constriction of dilated nasal vessels, therefore reducing tissue swelling and nasal congestion

Dose advice

  • Sudafed 12 hour (controlled release): 120mg, 10 tablets
  • Pseudoephedrine is included in many over the counter preparations; dosage depends on the type of combination used, or whether it is controlled release
  • Adult: 60mg every 4-6 hours; max 240mg daily
  • Child>2 years: 1mg/kg 3-4 times daily
  • Combination products are not recommended

Common side effects

  • CNS stimulation
  • Nervousness
  • Excitability
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia

Co-existing conditions:

  • Pseudoephedrine products are contra-indicated in uncontrolled hypertension and MAOI treatment
  • May affect blood glucose control in diabetes
  • Increased risk of arrhythmia in heart disease
  • Blood pressure may increase in patients with hypertension
  • Symptoms may be exacerbated in patients with prostatic hypertrophy
  • In patients with hyperthyroidism, there is an increased sensitivity to sympathomimetics

Uncommon side effects

  • Tachycardia
  • Palpitations
  • Arrhythmias
  • Seizures
  • Hypertension
  • Ischaemic colitis
