Indication

Used for symptom relief in non-productive cough

Not to be used in asthma, COPD or respiratory failure

Action

Acts by suppressing the cough center in the brain

Dose advice

Adult: 15-30mg 3-4 times daily

Child: 2-5 years: 3mg, 3-4 times daily

   5 years: 7.5-15mg, 3-4 times daily

Not to be used in children < 2years


Pregnancy: Safe to use. ADEC category A

Lactation: No data available but should be safe to use.

  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Alcohol- increased drowsiness;
    • avoid combined use CNS depressants- increased respiratory depression;
    • avoid concurrent useo MAOIs- may cause serotonin syndrome;
    • avoid concomitant use

Uncommon side effects

Respiratory depression (rare)
