Generic Name: Sorbitol
Product Name: Sorbilax

Indication

Sorbilax can be used in the treatment of chronic and habitual constipation. It should be used in combination with patient counselling regarding lifestyle alterations, such as water and fibre intake and adequate exercise, which help in constipation management.

Action

Sorbitol is a compound that is poorly absorbed from the digestive system into the bloodstream. It travels through the intestines to the colon, where it acts to draw water into the colon. This increased water content helps soften the stool and make it easier to pass.

– increase to 20ml three times daily if necessary
– dose should be individualised according to patient response
– concurrent administration of food may reduce the effectiveness of Sorbilax; it should be taken 1 hour before or 3 hours after food
– 2-3 days may be required for the full effect to become apparent

Schedule

Unscheduled

Common side effects

– flatulence
– bloating
– abdominal distension
– cramping
– nausea

Uncommon side effects

Diarrhoea may result from excessive use or in patients with decreased tolerance to Sorbilax.
When used in combination with activated charcoal, electrolyte imbalances may occur due to fluid losses.
