Indication

Sigma Liquid Antacid is indicated for the treatment of a number of conditions associated with too much acid in the stomach. These include:
– indigestion
– heartburn
– flatulence
– upset stomach

Action

Aluminium hydroxide and Magnesium hydroxide are antacids, they work to neutralise the gastric acid produced by the stomach. They have no effect on the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Simethicone is a drug that gets rid of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, which may have formed due to the reaction of the antacids with the stomach acid.
The combination of these two mechanisms of action relieves symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion as well as flatulence and belching.

Dose advice

Adults
– 10-20ml 3-4 times daily, when symptoms occur or are expected

Common side effects

Aluminium hydroxide is known for producing constipation, whilst Magnesium hydroxide can cause diarrhoea. The two are combined in Sigma Liquid Antacid in the hope that these effects will cancel each other out and no bowel side effects will be experienced.
Simethicone is generally a well-tolerated drug, with no side effects reported.
