Generic Name: Delavirdine mesylate
Product Name: Rescriptor

Indication

The main use of Rescriptor is the treatment of HIV infection in adults and children over the age of 12. It is used in combination with other antiviral medications.

Action

Rescriptor works by binding to an essential component of the HIV virus to reduce its ability to replicate and produce more copies of itself. It is metabolised by enzymes in the liver and has the potential for interactions with a wide variety of medications.

Dose advice

– Standard dosage is 400 mg (four 100 mg tablets) three times daily, administered in combination with other antiretroviral therapies.
– Rescriptor may be taken with or without food
– If the patient has difficulty swallowing, tablets may be dissolved in 100 mL of water immediately before administration

Common side effects

As with any other medication, Rescriptor can cause a number of side effects, the majority of which are likely to be mild to moderate and should cease when the drug is stopped. Some of the more common side effects include:
– Nausea and vomiting
– Diarrhoea
– Rash/itch
– Headache
– Fatigue

Uncommon side effects

Less common side effects include:
– Abdominal pain
– Fever
– Flu-like symptoms
– Muscle aches
– Dizziness
– Reduced numbers of immune cells in the blood, increasing risk of infection
