Pro-Banthine
Generic Name: Propantheline bromide
Product Name: Pro-Banthine
Indication
Pro-Banthine is used to help in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease of both the stomach and duodenum. It is also useful for the treatment of a number of bladder problems including:
- malfunction of the nerves controlling bladder emptying
- urinary incontinence due to overactivity of the bladder-emptying muscle
Due to its ability to reduce sweat production, Pro-Banthine is also used to treat excessive perspiration.
Action
Pro-Banthine contains an agent that slows down and relaxes various aspects of the gastrointestinal system by blocking a chemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a substance used by many nerves to transmit messages, and Pro-Banthine works on the peripheral nerves that use it. The drug cannot cross the blood-brain barrier so no effects are seen in the central nervous system. Pro-Banthine reduces secretion of a number of substances, importantly gastric acid. It also reduces saliva and sweat secretion. Acetylcholine is also important in promoting the movement of the gastrointestinal system, so Pro-Banthine is useful in slowing that down too, as well as relaxing any spasm that may be occurring.
