Generic Name: Paracetamol; Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride
Product Name: Panadol Sinus

Indication

Relieves sinus pain, congestion and fever.

Action

Parecetamol treats pain and fever via uncertain mechanisms. It is not an anti inflammatory.Pseudoephedrine treats nasal decongestion (a blocked and runny nose) by reducing the swelling in the nose. Pseudoephedrine does this by narrowing the blood vessels.

Dose advice

-Available as caplets
-Adults (>12 years)
â?? 2 caplets every 6 hours.
-Max-doses in 24 hours
-Avoid if experienced allergic reactions in past to parecetemol or pseudoephedrine.
-Avoid alcohol when taking
-Consult your doctor before using if you:
-Are pregnant or breast feeding
-Suffer from any of the following conditions:
-High blood pressure, heart or vessel disease, thyroid disease
-Take antidepressant or blood pressure medication
-Seek appropriate medical advice if uncertain.

Usage
-Temporarily relief of sinus pain and congestion
â??not for prolonged use
-Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

-Avoid alcohol

Contraindications
-Previous intolerance or hypersensitivity
-Severe hypertension or coronary artery disesase
-Concurrent use of MOAIâ??s
â??within a two week period


Precautions
-Renal and hepatic impairment
-caution should be taken
-Severe hypertension, cardiac or peripheral vascular disease, hyperthyroidism, or on antihypertensive or antidepressant therapy.
-Diabetes mellitus or closed angle glaucoma (pseudoephedrine).
-Pregnancy (Category B2)
-Not recommended in pregnancy.
Lactation
-Both parecetamol and pseudoephedrine are excreted breast milk in very small amounts. Parecetamol but does not appear to harm infant however the effect of pseudoephedrine is unknown. Interactions Parecetamol
-Increased absorption in increased gastric emptying ie metoclopramide
-Decreases absorption in decreased gastric emptying ie. Narcotic analgesics
-Chloramphenical â?? increased concentrations in combination with parecetamol
-Anticoagulants may become more effective upon prolonged use of parecetamol.
-Toxicity more likely in those taking concurrent enzyme inducing substance Eg. Alcohol, antiepileptic
Pseudoephedrine
– Increased absorption of pseudoephedrine in combination with aluminium.

Common side effects

-Pseudoephedrine
-Possible side effects due to tend to be mild and disappear quickly. These include: palpitations, increased heart rate, difficultly sleeping, lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, tremor, nervousness.Serious side effects are very rare.
-Parecetamol
-Overdose symptoms are important as excess parecetamol can cause liver damage and be potentially fatal.Symptoms develop within the first two days and include vomiting, abdominal pain, low blood pressure and sweating.In cases of overdosage, immediately telephone the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or seek appropriate medical help.

Uncommon side effects

Possible very rare reactions include allergic reactions, hallucinations and nausea. Seek medical advice immediately if any of the above are suspected.
