Indication
Relief of nasal congestion associated with acute and chronic rhinitis, common cold and sinusitis
Action
Produce vasoconstriction in nasal mucosa; decrease nasal blood flow and congestion
Dose advice
- Otrivin Nasal Mist Adult: Nasal spray, 0.1%, 15mL
- Otrivin Nasal Mist Junior: Nasal spray, 0.05%, 15mL
- Adult, Child > 12 years: Nasal spray 0.1%, 1 spray into each nostril up to 3 times daily
- Nose drops 0.1%, 2-3 drops into each nostril up to 3 times daily
- Child > 6 years: Nasal spray/drop 0.05%, 2-3 sprays/drops into each nostril up to 3 times daily
Common side effects
- Transient burning, stinging, increased nasal discharge
- Rebound congestion with prolonged use (4-5 days)
- Rebound congestion is associated with overuse and may take several weeks to reverse
- Nasal decongestants are contra-indicated in MAOI treatment
Uncommon side effects
- Hypertension
- Nausea
- Nervousness
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Insomnia
- Headache
- CNS effects are more common in children
