Indication

Relief of nasal congestion associated with acute and chronic rhinitis, common cold and sinusitis

Action

Produce vasoconstriction in nasal mucosa; decrease nasal blood flow and congestion

Dose advice

Otrivin Nasal Drops Junior: Nasal drop, 0.05%, 15mL

Otrivin Nasal Drops Adult: Nasal drop, 0.1%, 15mL

Adult, Child > 12 years: Nasal spray 0.1%, 1 spray into each nostril up to 3 times daily

Nose drops 0.1%, 2-3 drops into each nostril up to 3 times daily


Child > 6 years: Nasal spray/drop 0.05%, 2-3 sprays/drops into each nostril up to 3 times daily

Common side effects

Transient burning, stinging, increased nasal dischargeRebound congestion with prolonged use (4-5 days). Rebound congestion is associated with overuse and may take several weeks to reverse

Nasal decongestants are contra-indicated in MAOI treatment

Uncommon side effects

  • Hypertension
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Headache
  • CNS effects are more common in children
