Indication

Used for symptom relief in non-productive cough Not to be used in asthma, COPD or respiratory failure

Action

Acts by suppressing the cough center in the brain

Dose advice

Oral liquid (syrup) 3mg/mL, 200mL

Adult:

15-30mg 3-4 times daily

Child:

• 2-5 years: 3mg, 3-4 times daily
• 5 years: 7.5-15mg, 3-4 times daily
• Not to be used in children < 2years

Pregnancy:

Safe to use. ADEC category A

Lactation:

No data available but should be safe to use

Common side effects

Drowsiness Constipation Nausea Vomiting Drug Interactions:

Alcohol:

• increased drowsiness; avoid combined use

CNS depressants:

• increased respiratory depression; avoid concurrent use MAOIs
• May cause serotonin syndrome; avoid concomitant use

Uncommon side effects

• Respiratory depression (rare)
