Normacol Plus

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Generic Name: Sterculia, Frangula
Product Name: Normacol Plus

Indication

Normacol Plus is used in the treatment of constipation, particularly that due to decreased intestinal muscle tone or slow movement of gut contents. It is useful in the treatment of constipation in which bulking agents have failed.
Normacol Plus may also be useful in stimulating bowel motion after rectal surgery or haemorrhoidectomy.

Action

Sterculia and Frangula are two different types of laxative. Sterculia is a vegetable gum that is able to absorb large amounts of water, upp to 60 times its own volume. It passes through the stomach and intestines without being absorbed. Once it reaches the colon, Sterculia stimulates movement of water into the stool, softening it and making it easier to pass. Frangula bark stimulates the muscle of the intestines to aid in evacuation of the stool.
