Indication
Mesalazine is used in the treatment of:
- Acute inflammatory large bowel disease.
- Acute mild and moderate ulcerative colitis.
- Maintenance treatment of colitis.
Action
Mesalazine has a local anti-inflammatory action on the bowel wall, however, its exact mechanism of action is unknown.
Dose advice
Adults:– 250-500 mg orally taken three times a day.
Children:The initial recommended dose is 15-20 mg/kg orally three times a day. Maintenance treatment is with 10 mg/kg 2-3 times a day. Mesalazine is safe to use during pregnancy and lactation.
Hepatic impairment: Mesalazine is hepatically cleared and should be used with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
