Indication

Omeprazole in used in the following conditions
Peptic ulcer disease
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Zollingerâ??Ellison syndrome
Helicobacter pylori eradication
Prevention of heartburn, peptic ulcers and erosions of the stomach lining in at-risk patients on long-term treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
Scleroderma oesophagus

Action

Omeprazole acts by suppressing the secretion of stomach acid.

Dose advice

Peptic Ulcer Disease
The initial recommended dose 20â??40 mg orally once a day for 4â??8 weeks or 40 mg intravenously once a day.
Patients on intravenous therapy should be changed to oral treatment as soon as possible
Maintenance dosing is 20 mg orally once a day

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease
The initial recommended dose is 20-40mg orally once a day or 40 mg intravenously once a day
The maximum recommended dose is 80 mg a day
The maintenance dose should be the minimum dose required to relieve symptoms
Patients on intravenous therapy should be changed to oral treatment as soon as possible

NSAID associated peptic ulcer disease or gastric erosion
Treatment of these complications requires 20â??40 mg orally once a day for 4â??8 weeks
For prophylaxis 20 mg orally once a day

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome
The initial recommended dose is 60 mg intravenously or orally once a day
Doses of up to 240mg a day may be required
Maintenance dosing is 20â??120 mg orally given as a single dose or if the dose is greater then 80 mg daily as 2 divided doses
Patients on intravenous therapy should be changed to oral treatment as soon as possible


Helicobacter pylori eradication
20 mg orally twice a day for 7 days
This treatment in used in combination with other medications

Children
Intravenous dosing
2 mg/kg for the first dose up to a maximum 80 mg, then 1 mg/kg up to a maximum of 40 mg every 8â??12 hours.

Oral dosing
Children less than 10 kg: 5 mg once a day
Children weighing 10â??20 kg: 10 mg once a day
Children weighing greater than 20 kg: 20 mg once a day
