Indication

Major depression
Panic disorder
Social phobia

Action

Competitive and reversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO). It is relatively selective for type A (MAO-A). Synaptic concentrations of serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine are increased.
Full activity of the MAO-A enzyme is restored within 24-48 hours of stopping the drug
When used at higher than recommended doses, moclobemide will also inhibit MAO-B (dietary restrictions would then be warranted)

Dose advice

Initially 300mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses, increasing after 2 weeks.
Maintenance 450-600mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses.
Usual maximum dose 600mg daily
