Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Proposed mode of action of psychostimulants in ADHD is enhancement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission.
This aims to reduce functional impairment across a range of settings (including home, school and peer relationships) and minimize long term adverse effects on academic performance, vocational success, social and emotional development.
Methylphenidate should be used cautiously in patients with hypertension. Blood pressure should be monitored at appropriate intervals in all patients taking methylphenidate, especially in those with hypertension. Methylphenidate is a sympathomimetic amine which can cause the release of noradrenaline from the sympathetic neurons leading to an increase in blood pressure.
