Indication

Treatment of asthma and bronchospasm.

Action

Ipratropium relieves asthma by relaxing muscles within the airways (bronchodilation) making it easier to breath.

Dose advice

Ipratropium in inhaled via a nebuliser.
Adults (>12 years) – inhale 250 to 500 micrograms (diluted in 2 to 3 mL of saline) every six hours. Max 2mg per day.
Children (<12 years) – inhale 250 micrograms (diluted in 2 to 3 mL of saline) every six hours. Max 1mg per day.
Discard unused solution.

Common side effects

Headaches, increased heart rate, palpitations, nausea, dry mouth or throat, cough.

Uncommon side effects

Headaches, increased heart rate, palpitations, nausea, dry mouth or throat, cough, allergic reactions, glaucoma, eye pain, urinary retention.
