Indication

Paracetamol relieves pain and reduces fever.
It is used for the relief of
mild to moderate pain
fever
migraine
tension headaches

Action

Paracetamol reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins which are responsible for the mediation of pain and fever.

Dose advice

Adults
0.5 – 1g every 3-6 hours as required given orally or rectally
The maximum daily dose is 6g

Children
15 mg/kg every 4â??6 hours given orally or rectally
Single doses of 30 mg/kg may be used for night-time dosing
The maximum recommended dose is 60 mg/kg daily over 48 hours however up to 90 mg/kg a day may be used under close medical supervision
