Generic Name: Salbutamol sulfate

Indication

Treatment and prevention of asthma and chronic obstructive airways disease (chronic bronchitis and emphysema).

Action

Salbutamol relieves asthma by relaxing muscles within the airways (bronchodilation) making it easier to breath.

Dose advice

Inhalation device.
Adults and children: one to two inhalations (100 -200 micrograms) every 4 hours as required.
Spacer device may be used for patients with difficulty in timing inhalation. This includes most children.
Notify doctor if symptoms do not dissipate upon use of inhaler, if symptoms reappear within 3 hours of use or if inhaler is being used in increasing amounts.

Common side effects

Tremor, changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate

Uncommon side effects

Headaches, nausea, palpitions, sensation of warmth, cardiac arrhythmias, muscle cramps, allergic reactions, mouth and throat irritation with inhaled salbutamol.
