Generic Name: Calcitriol

Indication

Calctriol is used in treatment of low calcium levels (hypocalcaemia) in patients on chronic renal dialysis.

Action

Calcitrol increases the levels of calcium in the body by increasing the absorption of calcium in the intestines and by decreasing the amount of calcium lost through the kidneys. By increasing the calcium levels Calcitriol promotes the formation of strong bones.

Dose advice

Hypocalcaemia in chronic renal dialysis
0.5 micrograms intravenously three times each week given as a bolus dose at the end of haemodialysis
This dose may be increased by 0.25â??0.5 microgram every 2â??4 weeks depending on the patientâ??s clinical response.
