Aluminium hydroxide is an antacid. It neutralises the acid produced by the stomach to relieve symptoms of stomach upset and indigestion.

Codeine phosphate is an analgesic agent. It is an opioid agent, and works on special opioid receptors in the brain. These receptors are also found in the gastrointestinal system, and Codeine causes constipation as a side effect (therapeutic effect in this application) due to stimulation of these receptors.

Kaolin and Pectin are adsorbent antidiarrhoeal agents. They bind to toxins and bacteria and also form a protective intestinal lining.
