Indication

Benadryl for the Family Original treats colds and hayfever. It helps to relieve sneezing, coughing, itchy, watery red eyes and a runny or blocked nose.

Action

Benadryl for the Family Original contains:-Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. It blocks the action of histamine. Histamine is the cause of many allergic symptoms eg. sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. It also relieves cough.- Ammonium chloride helps to clear phlegm and mucus.

Dose advice

-May cause drowsiness, take precautions whilst driving or operating heavy machinery
-Should not be taken with alcohol or other sedatives
-Adults (> 12 years)- 10 mL every 4 hours
-Children (6-12 years)- 5 mL; every 4 hours
-Children (2-5 years) – 2.5 mL every 4 hours
-Consult your doctor before using if -you are breastfeeding-you are taking MAOIâ??s (a type of antidepressant) – suffer from glaucoma, asthma, peptic ulcer disease or have difficulty urinating.

Common side effects

Sedation is common, however will disappear after repeated doses.

Uncommon side effects

Rare side effects may include tiredness, dizziness, ringing in the ears, difficultly concentrating, difficulty with cooridination, irritability, difficulty sleeping, euphoria, nervousness, insomnia, tremors, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, constipation, loss of appetite, difficulty urinating and blurred vision.-In overdose adults may experiences restlessness, disorientation and children may experiences agitation and fits. Seek medical advice immediately if any of the above are suspected.
