Indication

Used for symptom relief in non-productive coughNot to be used in asthma, COPD or respiratory failure

Action

Acts by suppressing the cough center in the brain

Dose advice

Adult:

15-30mg 3-4 times daily

Child:

  • 2-5 years: 3mg, 3-4 times daily
  • 5 years: 7.5-15mg, 3-4 times daily
  • Not to be used in children < 2years

Pregnancy:


Safe to use. ADEC category A

Lactation:

  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Alcohol- increased drowsiness; avoid combined use
    • CNS depressants- increased respiratory depression; avoid concurrent use
    • MAOIs- May cause serotonin syndrome; avoid concomitant use

Uncommon side effects

  • Respiratory depression (rare)
